MARY KELLY recently left her position as Director of the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts (BCAPA) Suzuki Strings program in Newton, KS to become co-chair of the Suzuki Strings Department at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. In Kansas, she was assistant principal viola of the Wichita Symphony and principal viola of the Wichita Grand Opera. Ms. Kelly received her Bachelors of Music in viola performance from University of Texas at Austin and her Masters in viola from Wichita State University. While studying in Austin, she received Suzuki pedagogy instruction from Phyllis Young and Lori Scott as part of the prestigious Strings Project Program. After graduation from UT Austin, Mary went on to join the Center for New Music at University of Iowa. While at the Center, the ensemble toured to New York as well as hosted a Russian music festival at the University. Summers were spent at Bowdoin, Garth Newel, and Weathersfield Music Festivals, as well as the National Orchestral Institute. Her teachers have included Donald McInnes, Roger Myers, Christine Rutledge, and Catherine Consiglio. She has also worked with Victoria Chiang, Lynne Ramsey, Jeff Irvine, Heidi Castleman, and Roland Vamos. Previous orchestral positions have included the Cedar Rapids and Fairfax Symphonies. She has also performed with Rod Stewart and Josh Groban and has been a guest artist with Chamber Music at the Barn. As a Suzuki teacher, Ms. Kelly started her training at Ottawa Suzuki Institute in 2004. Since then, she has completed training through book 5 in Suzuki violin and plans to continue her education. Her teachers have included Elayne Ras, Ed Kreitman, Susan Kempter, Julia Hardie, Joanne Melvin, and Ed Sprunger. In the summers, she teaches at Five Seasons Music Festival in Cedar Rapids, IA. |
